Three layers of light

Layered lighting concept use three main lighting functions which are ?general?, ?accent? and ?task lighting?. General illumination is applied through a ceiling to cover the entirety of a room. The accented or decorative layer of light usually comes from table lamps or scones. For tasks which are specific in nature, undercabinet lighting is a perfect example covering appropriate lighting. The layering concept for LED lighting is an ever expanding, ever changing concept which keeps on evolving with the evolution of technology.

The governing factor in any residential lighting project is its ability to create a space where you actually want to spend your time, says Terry McGowan, ALA director of engineering.

To serve the all-purpose lighting, LED lights have successfully been used in the subsequent layers of accent and task lighting. However, it is with accent lighting that LED lights have the most useful application.

We will take an example for that. Lighted area can be easily adjusted in size, color or direction as track lighting is often used for accent lighting,” said Terry McGowan.

“There are some new types of LED track lighting which are designed to be adjusted by hand to change the color or size of the light beam, and there are even fixture types with built-in adjusting systems that can be operated by a remote or a mobile app,? he added.

The latest breakthrough involves not only controlling the lighting to turn it on or off but can be kept dim as well. Another wonderful feature is adjusting the color tone of LED lights with respect to the preferred time of the day. A key advantage in using adjustable lights ensures that a room can enhance a unique design element without flooding it with light.
