LEDs with a wavelength of 635 nanometers are being used to treat patients who want to reduce weight. Dr Sasson Moulavi, Medical Director of Smart for Life in Boca Raton, Florida, US has used red LEDs in weight loss program.
The red LEDs called NLAL is like a miracle drug for obesity, said Moulavi. The LED treatment is used along with the calorie controlled diet. Together, they help patients reduce 6.80 kilograms (15 pounds) per month, and 10.16 cm four inches from the waist line after three to four treatment sessions, according to Moulavi.
LED systems absorption rate is much more than lasers because of the refraction and strength of the light beam. While absorption rate of LEDs is about 70%, that of lasers is just 30%. Hence, LEDs are being used in this weight loss program.
Another difference between laser and LED designs in weight loss devices is 30 diodes are embedded in each LED pad, in contrast lasers only use 8-12 diodes. However, this treatment is quite costly, which is about US $300 per session.
