Are all street lights suitable to operate in worst weather conditions?
Today, many countries are shifting to LED street lights, and hence many manufacturers are producing them. However, when you study the characteristics of these street lights to see if they are suitable to operate in the worst weather conditions, then many of them fail to live up to the required characteristics.
Check the operating temperature
It is difficult to find in the market street lights that can have an operating temperature ranging from -40°C to +60°C, and that can possess a degree of protection with IP67 rating. All the LEDs used have a working life of 20 years, for a use of 12 hours per day. After 20 years, they still have an efficiency of 80%. The probability that only one LED is defective is 1 in 1 million.
So, the question that one may ask is whether it is difficult to get a similar result. Keeping in mind that each component is part of a chain, and that every part of this chain must have the same characteristics of the other parts, LEDs must be able to operate at -40°C, just like the lenses, the connection cables, the power supply unit, the connectors, and all the other components.
By keeping these points in mind, manufacturers can offer to all customers outdoor LED lamps capable of operating without problems, whether it is in Siberia or in the Sahara. If to this we add that these lamps can be connected wirelessly to each other, which can be remotely controlled, where the lights intensity can increased or decreased, their light can be provided with at least 30 different optics to solve virtually all challenges of illumination, then the manufacturers will be delivering products a little out of the norm.
Street Lighting International (SLI) claims to use LEDs that have an operational life time of 100,000 hours or more. This means that when SLI street LED lamp works 12 hours/day, the LEDs will have a minimum span life of 20 years and estimated of 24 years or more. After 20 years, their efficiency will still be about 80%. As a result, maintenance costs reduce to zero.
SLI says that its LED street lights have very high resistance capability even to severe weather conditions. Each street LED lamp can operate from – 40 ° C to + 60 ° C of ambient temperature and can withstand the worst weather conditions. All its street LED lamps have IP67 protection grade.
